Worship and Daily Life in the Brethren Community

Share

At the core of everything we do in the Plymouth Brethren Christian Church is an unwavering faith in Jesus Christ and the Holy Bible. Our Plymouth Brethren beliefs are not confined to a single day of the week; they permeate every aspect of our daily lives, from the way we work to the way we raise our children. We believe the Bible is the inspired and living Word of God, and its teachings provide the ultimate blueprint for a life of moral integrity and spiritual fulfilment.

Central to our worship is the celebration of the Lord’s Supper every Sunday morning. Held in our local Gospel halls, this service is a sacred time of reflection and fellowship. It is here that the Plymouth Brethren faith is most deeply felt, as we gather to break bread and remember the sacrifice of Christ. Beyond Sunday, our members engage in daily Bible reading and prayer within their homes, ensuring that their spiritual connection remains vibrant and personal.

Some observers are curious about what they call Plymouth Brethren ‘rules’, particularly our practices regarding food and fellowship. It is true that we only share meals with those whom we would also join at the Lord’s Supper.

This practice is a deeply spiritual conviction based on Biblical principles. We view sharing a meal is an act of religious fellowship, and we believe it is important to maintain that unity with those who share the same convictions. However, this does not mean we do not interact with others. Our members are active in their workplaces and communities, treating everyone they meet with the utmost respect and kindness.

In today’s fast-paced world, we embrace technology as a means of remaining connected: enhancing our lives while remaining mindful of its potential risks. We believe that by following Plymouth Brethren values, such as modesty in dress and hair and honesty in all our dealings, we can navigate the modern world without losing our spiritual compass.

Public discussion sometimes mistakenly applies labels like the ‘Exclusive Brethren’ to our community, but we are the Plymouth Brethren Christian Church. We are forward-looking, law-abiding, and compassionate. We of course pay our taxes, ensure our children have access to a wonderful education, and we contribute to the common good through volunteering and charitable donations for initiatives like the Rapid Relief Team.
