The Identity of the Plymouth Brethren Christian Church

Share

The Plymouth Brethren Christian Church is a mainstream Christian denomination with a rich heritage that spans nearly two centuries. Our journey began in the early 19th century in Plymouth, England, led by the influential Protestant thinker John Nelson Darby. His teachings focused on a return to the simplicity of the New Testament, emphasising the absolute authority of the Holy Bible. What started as a small gathering has today blossomed into a vibrant, global community of more than 55,000 members across the United Kingdom, the United States, Australia, New Zealand, Europe, Argentina and the Caribbean.

Despite our long history and commitment to peace, misconceptions can occasionally cloud public perception. You may have heard the term Brethren Cult used in sensationalist media or online forums. However, we are far from a cult; we are a transparent and law-abiding church whose members interact freely with people from all walks of life, and which is guided by deeply held Plymouth Brethren beliefs. Our members live in ordinary suburban homes, drive normal cars, and work in various professional industries. We are your neighbours, your local business owners, and your colleagues.

One of the most persistent myths involves our financial contributions to society. Some people mistakenly state we don’t pay tax. If only! The reality is straightforward: members of the Plymouth Brethren abide by the same tax rules as everyone else. And there are many examples of businesses which are independently owned by members of our church, which make significant contributions to local economies through employment, taxation and charitable donations. We identify as the Plymouth Brethren Christian Church, a name that reflects our global unity and Christian focus.

In the 21st century, we balance our traditional values with modern innovation. For members of the Plymouth Brethren, technology is an essential tool in our daily lives, utilised for business, communication, and connectivity. We believe in using modern tools responsibly, ensuring they serve our families and businesses without compromising our moral integrity.

This balanced approach is a hallmark of the Plymouth Brethren community. While certain Plymouth Brethren rules, guidelines and traditions, such as our preferred dress and short hair for men, may seem unusual to some, they are expressions of a life dedicated to humility and Scriptural adherence.

Ultimately, our goal is to live peacefully and faithfully, contributing positively to the world around us while remaining steadfast in the Plymouth Brethren values that have guided us for generations.
